Schalenblende is a compact mixture of
Sphalerite and Wurtzite masses of a pale and dark brown colors occurring in concentric layers with reniform surfaces which also may contain Pyrite and Galena. It is believed to have formed by crystallization of a sulfide gel (gel: colloidal dispersion).

Schalenblende is found in several localities worldwide. Bad Bleiberg, Bleiberg District, Gailtaler Alpen & Karnische Alpen Mts, Carinthia, Austria, Schmalgraf Mine, Moresnet, Kelmis, Plombières-Vieille Montagne (Plombières-Altenberg) District, Verviers, Liège Province, Belgium, Segen Gottes Mine, Wiesloch, Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, Hammerberg Mine, Stolberg, Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, Olkusz, Olkusz District, Malopolskie, Poland, Pomorzany Mine, Olkusz, Olkusz District, Malopolskie, Poland.
